Elizabeth Scherer has always been drawn to the small, magical things that make life feel full of wonder. From the animals she watched as a child in South Florida to the stories her father told at bedtime, her love for storytelling grew from a place of curiosity, family, and deep respect for the natural world.

Where Her Imagination First Began
Long before Elizabeth became an author, she was a child listening closely to the stories around her. Some came from her father, who filled her evenings with tales of animals and adventure. Others came from the world outside, where turtles, birds, squirrels, crabs, and sea life became part of her everyday imagination.
Growing up near the Florida coast gave Elizabeth a lasting love for nature. She spent much of her childhood outdoors, noticing the movement of animals, the rhythm of the ocean, and the quiet lessons hidden in the world around her.
Those early memories stayed with her. Years later, they would become part of the heart behind her books, stories that invite children to wonder, to ask questions, and to care about the creatures who share this world with us.

Elizabeth did not rush into writing. For years, she lived, traveled, observed, and gathered memories. Her time living in Japan helped her see how stories can open doors into new cultures, new perspectives, and new ways of understanding people.

The White Squirrels That Started a Story
One of Elizabeth’s most beloved stories, Squirlie and Maude: The White Squirrels of Brevard, was inspired by the rare white squirrels of Brevard, North Carolina. What began as a local legend became a charming children’s book about adventure, community, and the magic of paying attention to nature.
Through Squirlie and Maude, Elizabeth brings together folklore, animal life, and imagination in a way that feels warm and meaningful. The story reminds young readers that even the smallest creatures can carry big lessons.
